11 Of The Weirdest Burgers Ever

It seems that yesterday was Happy National Cheeseburger Day. I totally missed that. Maybe it's because I don't like cheeseburgers. I do like the burgers, but not the cheese. I'm from the Netherlands and I don't like cheese. Weird huh?

Anyway, in honor of the holiday celebrating one of the world's most popular foods, Neatorama named a few of the strangest hamburgers ever grilled up and served on a bun.

The Monastery Under The Lake

Take a trip up the Volga river in Russia and when you get to the small town of Kalyazin keep your eyes peeled for something unusual. There, in the middle of an artificial lake stands something a little perplexing.

During the 1940s the then Communist government had big plans to make the turbulent river navigable all year around. So a cascade of dams and reservoirs was ordered on the Upper Volga. It gave the region the much needed transport artery and hydroelectricity in to the bargain. It also buried hundreds of years of history, of which the bell tower of the Makaryevsky Monastery is the only visible remnant above the waters of the Uglich reservoir.

Wonderful Life With The Elements

picture used with permission

Wonderful Life With The Elements is a new book by Japanese artist Bunpei Yorifuji. It's an illustrated guide to the periodic table that gives chemistry a friendly face. In this periodic table, every element is a unique character whose properties are represented visually: heavy elements are fat and man-made elements are robots.

Every detail is significant, from the length of an element's beard to the clothes on its back. You'll also learn about each element's discovery, its common uses, and other vital stats like whether it floats - or explodes - in water. In this periodic paradise, the elements are people too. And once you've met them, you'll never forget them.

Dark Energy Camera Snaps First Images Ahead Of Survey

The highest-resolution camera ever built has begun its quest to pin down the mysterious stuff that makes up nearly three-quarters of our Universe. The Dark Energy Survey's 570-million-pixel camera will scan some 300 million galaxies in the coming five years. The goal is to discover the nature of dark energy, which is theorised to be responsible for the ever-faster expansion of the Universe.

Its first image, taken 12 September, focussed on the Fornax galaxy cluster. In time, along with its massive haul of individual galaxies, it will study 100,000 galaxy clusters - the largest stable structures we know of - and 4,000 supernovae, the bright dying throes of stars.
